A barred owl has flown in, responding to calls echoing through the forest from a speaker. The owl either expects to meet a mate or a competitor. Shortly after this moment, biologists killed the owl, whose populations have exploded in the past 20 years especially. The owls reproduce profusely, have expansive diets, and are seen as the main cause of continued northern spotted owl decline. Even with more intact forests, barred owls would be decimating spotted owls, according to several biologists working on the issue.
