A male northern spotted owl sits expectantly after being called in by calls played on a speaker system in the forest in Hoopa Valley. Northern spotted owls have fairly small home ranges, being faithful to limited areas year round. Biologists project the calls at known or suspected owl locations as a means to survey for current occupation. This particular individual is well known to the biologists working for the tribe. They have seen him on multiple years, and it seems the owl knows them, too. He waits expectantly for his meal.
