Young Night Heron
A young night heron explores the banks of the Lynnhaven River in search of a morning meal. This bird is an excellent indicator species for monitoring the health of an environment, largely due to its wide distribution and feeding behavior. Young night herons are especially good subjects, as they disgorge their stomachs when disturbed, making it easy to study their diets, according the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. (Photo/Morgan Heim)
