David Lile, (right), grandson of rancher Wallace Roney (left) latches the fladry fencing after driving cattle into the protected enclosure. The fladry -- flaps of brightly colored flagging, which in this case is also attached to electric fencing -- has so far proven 100 percent effective at protecting the cattle from wolves while inside. Though effective, the fladry comes with its own challenges they must balance, such as time and manpower to train the cattle, more fence maintenance and the degradation of grassland which makes it harder for cattle to put on weight.
