Over 4,000 birds, mostly Greater crested terns and about 70 Chinese crested terns, use this island as their nesting colony. The habitat that encompasses the colony is manmade, carefully crafted over many years to provide habitat and an invitation for nesting terns. To establish the colony, researchers with the Zhenjiang Natural History Museum and Oregon State University/Audubon had to clear, transform and transform again the slope, as well as install fake terns before they succeeded in drawing the numbers of birds seen today.
