The team uses a high definition camera to monitor the colony remotely. The camera, mounted centrally above the colony can swivel and zoom giving volunteers views of almost every bird on the main part of the colony. It also records videos, which can be studied later. Here, volunteer Fan Zhang reviews videos of Chinese crested terns nesting on the colony. Since the station runs on solar power, electricity is reserved for only the most essential of acitivities. The team does get some cell signal, and fellow volunteer Cheng Qian catches up on messages.
